    Appeared on Broadway in 'The Heavenly Twins' (1955), 'Tovarich' (1963), 'Camino Real' (1970) and 'A Talent for Murder' (1981)
    Married actresses Maria Montez and Marissa Pavan
    For his American stage debut, he had to learn the lines phonetically and recalled, 'On opening night, I played the part not understanding a word I was saying, and I've never gotten such good reviews since.'
    When their Hollywood careers cooled off, he and Montez moved to Europe.
    He and Pavan got divorced and then remarried.
    He joined the Free French forces during WWII, was injured when his jeep hit a landmine, and was awarded the Legion of Honor and Croix de Guerre.
    His remarriage to Pavan lasted until his death.
    The Guardian wrote that in movies he 'exuded the dignity and charm for which he was known in real life.'
