    (circa 672-May 26, 735)
Born in Sunderland, England, United Kingdom
    Monk and scholar
Wrote 'An Ecclesiastical History of the English People'
Known as 'the Father of English History'
Also wrote Biblical commentary and theological works
Named a Doctor of the Church by Pope Leo XIII (1899)
He was ordained a deacon six years before reaching the minimum age.
Although he was a priest, he may have been married, since he wrote 'Prayers are hindered by the conjugal duty because as often as I perform what is due to my wife I am not able to pray.'
Other monks accused him of heresy after he calculated that the world had been created in 3952 BC -- 52 years short of the right year!
He is often still referred to as the Venerable Bede, despite having been promoted to Saint Bede over a century ago.
When he was fourteen, he was one of only two monks to survive an outbreak of plague at the monastery of Jarrow.
He enjoyed music and was described as an accomplished singer.
On his deathbed, he wrote a five-line poem, 'Bede's Death Song.'
He was so influential that a 9th-century monk declared that God 'has made Bede rise from the West as a new Sun to illuminate the whole Earth.'
