    Died in Oberemmendorf, Germany
    Escaped from Berlin's Communist (Eastern) sector by leaping over a barb wire fence
    He was the first of 2000 soldiers to escape to West Berlin.
    He refused to visit remaining family in East Germany fearing reprisals.
    He battled depression.
    He hanged himself at 56.
    At 19, he was a soldier guarding the construction of the Berlin Wall.
    On August 16, 1961, he jumped over a small barb wire fence and into Berlin's Western, non-Communist sector.
    The image, photographed by Peter Leibing, is one of the most famous of the Cold War era.
    He said he felt 'truly free' when the Berlin Wall crumbled in November 1989.
