    He is bipolar and schizophrenic.
    His mental illnesses have repeatedly hampered his music and art careers.
    He was institutionalized after attacking his manager with a pipe (1990).
    While hospitalized, he suggested to Mountain Dew he should become their spokesperson and wrote a song claiming to have been locked up because he 'loved the Mountain Dew so much.' (Mountain Dew passed.)
    After his release, he moved in with his parents.
    He has written thousands of songs about a girl he had an unrequited teenage crush on; the Boston Globe described the object of his affections as 'appreciative and creeped out.'
    Trouser Press described his music as 'an extraordinary mixture of art and madness.'
    He came to national attention after being featured in an MTV special about the Austin music scene (1985).
    He has exhibited his art at the Whitney Biennial and Liverpool Biennial.
    His 'Hi, How Are You' mural became an Austin landmark.
    Kurt Cobain was a fan and was often photographed wearing a t-shirt with the 'Hi, How Are You' image.
