    Lawyer and high ranking Nazi official
    Governor General of occupied Poland (October 1939 - January 1945)
    Captured in Bavaria, tried at Nuremberg for war crimes
    Found guilty and sentenced to death by hanging
    One of the earliest Nazi party members, he had taken part in the Beer Hall Putsch in 1923.
    He served as the early Nazi Party's official lawyer and took part in nearly 2,400 cases.
    Under his administration, the Jews of Poland were forced into ghettos.
    His administration supplied Polish citizens as slave laborers to the greater German Reich. This and his overall treatment of the country earned him the nick name 'the butcher of Poland.'
    After being caught by Americans in Bavaria in 1945, he twice tried to commit suicide, once by cutting his throat, and later by slitting his wrist.
    He attempted to divorce from his wife, but was not able to due her dominance in the marriage.
    He was a veteran of WWI, having served in the German Army.
    Of the twelve defendants at Nuremberg to receive the death sentence, he was the only one among them to express remorse and take responsibility for his crimes.
    He attempted fourteen times to resign from his position as Governor General of Poland, only to be denied by Adolf Hitler each time.
    He disapproved of illegal killings of prisoners at the Dachau concentration camp as well as the executions of members of the SA during the night of the long knives. Because of this, he fell from favor with many top Nazis.
    He was considered an expert chess player.
