U.S. Congressman
    (July 30, 1940- )
    Born in Portland, Oregon
    Birth name was Patricia Scott
    Represented Colorado's 1st Congressional District (1973-97)
Famously dubbed Ronald Reagan 'the Teflon president'
She fills in the 'P' in her signature with a smiley face.
After graduating Harvard, she took a job with the federal government because a professor told her that few corporations would hire female lawyers.
When she was elected to the House, fellow Congresswoman Bella Abzug, upon learning that Schroeder had children aged two and six, told her 'I don't think you can do the job.'
She brought her diaper bag onto the floor of Congress.
When she cried upon announcing that she had decided not to run for president (1988), she was criticized by feminists, who felt that her emotional display undermined the chance for other women to run.
She earned a pilot's license and operated a flying service to pay for college.
She gave birth prematurely to twins who died (1968).
When a male Representative asked how she could simultaneously be a member of Congress and mother of two young children, she replied 'I have a mind and a uterus, and I use both.'
She sought a seat on the previously all-male Armed Services Committe, noting 'When men talk about defense, they always claim to be protecting women and children, but they never ask the women and children what they think.'
She was a fiscal conservative who outranked Republicans such as Jack Kemp on the National Taxpayers Union's scorecard.
She received the Tomahawk Club's Sam Rayburn Award for government service (1996) -- twenty years after being ejected from the then all-male Club's awards banquet.
