Liberated Venezuela from Spanish rule with Haitian assistance (1816)
Liberated Colombia (1819)
Created 'Gran Colombia' ('Great Colombia') comprised of Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador and Panama (December 1819)
Took over Peru (1822)

Why he might be annoying:

He kept his partial African ancestry a secret (his mother was a mulatto).
He had huge Elvis-like sideburns.
There are endless statues of him through out Venezuela, Colombia, and Ecuador.
He's often simply known as 'El Libertador' – 'The Liberator.'
The Venezuelan currency is named after him ('Bolivares').

Why he might not be annoying:

He died of tuberculosis.
Bolivia was named for him.
He is the main national hero in 6 different countries (Colombia, Panama, Venezuela, Peru, Ecuador, and Bolivia).
He always had the intention of creating a united South American state.
He was widowed in 1803 when his wife died of yellow fever on a visit to his native Venezuela.
He was orphaned at an early age.
Even though he's loved by many now, he was apparently a lonely man most of his life.
