The Resume

    (December 24, 1809-May 23, 1868)
    Born in Richmond, Kentucky
Frontiersman, fur trapper, scout and Indian fighter
Served the US Army as a soldier and scout in both the Mexican War and American Civil War
Carson City, Nevada is named for him

Why he might be annoying:

He was well adept in Indian culture, even taking a few Indian wives. Yet while he lived among some tribes, he waged war with others.
He nearly killed a french fur trapper over the love of an Arapho woman named 'Singing Grass.'
He executed three Mexican nationals during an early battle for California in the Mexican War.
Like Davy Crockett, there is much legend built up around his character. It was often claimed that he 'killed two bears and a dozen Indians before breakfast.' Obviously, this is not true.
In 1863 under his command, US forces waged a war of attrition against the Navajo tribe in New Mexico. Aided by rival Indian tribes, his forces destroyed all 'property' and land that belonged to the Navajos due to the tribe not adhering to treaties it had signed.
He supported putting Indians into reservations.

Why he might not be annoying:

His father died when he was eight years old, leaving him to take care of the family farm.
He served in the New Mexican volunteers during American Civil War, engaging Confederates at the battle of Valverde, New Mexico.
He was fluent in eight native American languages, as well as Spanish.
He defended Mexicans in their territory from hostile native tribes, despite being an American.
During the battle of San Pasqual in the Mexican War, Carson rode barefoot and unarmed across the California desert to send the word that reinforcements were needed.
He was the commander of US Army forces at the first Battle of Adobe Walls, a controversial battle against the combined efforts of Comanche Kiowa warriors in which US forces, outnumbered almost 10 to 1, bombarded the Indians with fire from howitzers. The Indians had previously signed a treaty to not attack settlers, but ignored it and waged war against them regardless.
Members of the tribes he fought held him in high regard due to his 'warrior abilities.'
He was considered 'soft' on Indians in his later years due to his blaming of the white man for much of the troubles out west and his outright disgust of massacres committed against various tribes by the Army.
