    Minister to the United Kingdom (1796-1803, 1825-26)

Why he might be annoying:

    He is sometimes confused with Franklin Pierce's vice president (William Rufus King).
    He lost twice as the Federalist Party nominee for vice president.
    He ran unsuccessfully for president, again as a Federalist (1816).
    He has the distinction of being the last Federalist senator (and presidential nominee), due to a split in the New York Democratic-Republican Party.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He was an avowed anti-Slavery advocate.
    He was one of the first Senators from New York.
    He volunteered for the militia in the American Revolutionary War after studying law at Harvard.
    He helped frame the federal Constitution and effect its ratification.
    He was a political ally of Alexander Hamilton and supported his fiscal proposals (such as the First Bank of the United States).
    He accepted John Quincy Adams's appointment to serve second term as ambassador to Britain, but ill health forced him to retire from public life.
