Why he might be annoying:

The BBC banned his original recording of ‘The Battle of New Orleans.' He had another version, depicting the Brits as the winners, recorded especially for British audiences.
At a radio talent contest hosted by Jim Reeves, he won first prize — an ashtray on a pedestal.
He wore a large cowboy hat for the sole purpose of covering his receding hairline.
In a bizarre turn of events, he died following a performance at Austin's Skyline Club — where his wife's previous husband performed his last show!

On the US country charts, ‘The Battle of New Orleans' spent about five months at #1.
He was a successful basketball player at Baylor University.
His mother taught him to play the guitar at age 11.
He was nicknamed ‘the Singing Fisherman' because he liked fishing more than music.
He was a member of the Louisiana Hayride off and on through the 1950s.
He died the very year ‘Sink the Bismarck' and ‘North to Alaska' were released.
