Military Personnel
    (October 12, 1919-November 24, 1943)
    Born in Waco, Texas
    US Navy steward and cook
Served on the battleships West Virginia and Nevada and the aircraft carrier Liscome Bay
Manned a machine gun during Pearl Harbor
Portrayed by Cuba Gooding, Jr. in the film 'Pearl Harbor'
    He had a girl's name.
He dropped out of school after twice failing to pass the eighth grade.
He has been credited with downing as many as six Japanese planes during Pearl Harbor, but the official naval records suggest he probably hit none.
Although the Senate and House both passed resolutions recommending him for the Medal of Honor, the Navy decided he did not meet the requirements.
Due to segregation in the Navy, he could only serve in a ship's mess.
During Pearl Harbor, he carried the West Virginia's wounded captain to an aid station and rescued several sailors from the water.
He became the first African-American to receive the Navy Cross.
He died when the Liscome Bay was sunk by a Japanese torpedo.
He was featured on a Navy recruiting poster.
