    She portrayed a Chinese madam in 'The Shanghai Gesture.'
    She committed suicide by overdosing on sleeping pills, leaving the note 'This is the only way I know to be free again. Please don't follow me.'
    Before going to Hollywood, she had a successful stage and radio career in New York.
    She had lesbian affairs with actresses Alla Nazimova and Marlene Dietrich and screenwriter Mercedes de Acosta.
    She married designer Eugene Berman at the Hollywood home of Igor Stravinsky.
