    He went by the nickname 'Grits.'

    Growing up, he slept with his air rifle and often took his first shot of the day out his bedroom window.
    He gave readers advice on how to combine fishing and hunting on 'cast and blast' trips.
    He served with the Army Air Corps in World War II.
    He was married to his wife Mary for 57 years until her death.
    He received a master's degree in wildlife management from Louisiana State University.
