Why he might be annoying
He left college without a degree after a series of arguments with his tutors.
He has been married three times, divorced twice.
He divorced his second wife over her insistence on sending their children to private schools, although he himself was educated at a private school.
He was arrested for obstructing access to the court while protesting against the trial of IRA bomber Patrick Magee (1986).
He almost went to jail for refusing to pay the poll tax (1990).
He called on Britain to leave NATO, which he called ‘an engine for the delivery of oil to the oil companies.’
He called designating Hamas as a terrorist organization ‘a big, big historical mistake.’
He praised Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez.
He was criticized for going on vacation in the middle of the Brexit referendum campaign (2016).
He alienated enough of the party leadership to result in two thirds of the shadow cabinet resigning, followed by a vote of ‘no confidence’ by Labour MPs (June 28, 2016).
He is a vegetarian.
One of his hobbies is ‘drain spotting’: photographing decorative drain and manhole covers.
Why he might not be annoying
He noted about his divorce from his second wife, ‘In lots of cases where people separate it is not for one reason alone,’ but the disagreement over schools was the only reason ‘of legitimate public interest.’
He lives modestly: ‘I don’t spend a lot of money…. I ride a bicycle and I don’t have a car.’
When thieves burglarized his apartment, they found so little of value that they threw one of his blazers from the window of the getaway car in disgust (2003)
During an investigation following a scandal over MPs abusing their expense accounts (2009), he was found to be the MP who claimed the fewest expenses. (He told a local newspaper it was important to respect the public’s money.)
He has campaigned for gay rights since his election to Parliament.
Under his leadership, Labour in the 2017 general election surprised most pundits, who had predicted an overwhelming Conservative victory, by gaining enough seats to deprive the Conservative Party of its majority in Parliament.
He won the Parliamentary ‘Beard of the Year’ award a record six times and was named Beard of the Year by the National Beard Liberation Front.
