He dropped out of school and ran away from home at 13 to work at the Denver Post.
His three marriages broke up over his long work hours and obsession with 'The New Yorker.' (He told James Thurber, 'I'm married to this magazine. It's all I think about.')

Dorothy Parker said, 'His ignorance was an Empire State Building of ignorance. You had to admire it for its size.'
He once asked, 'Is Moby Dick the whale or the man?'

Why he might not be annoying:

At 'Stars and Stripes' he launched a charity drive that raised two million francs to support French war orphans.
He gave former vaudevillian Dave Chasen the money to found the famed Chasen's restaurant.
He was a stickler for accuracy and fact checking.
He was said to have 'a genius for finding genius,' hiring for 'The New Yorker' such talents as James Thurber, E.B. White, Dorothy Parker, Robert Benchley, John O'Hara, Alexander Woollcott, S.J. Perelman, Janet Flanner, Peter Arno and Charles Addams.
