Why he might be annoying:

    He lost a large hunk of his inheritance in bad investments.
    He was traveling on the Titanic with his mistress.
    He objected to the steward, insisting that he put on a lifebelt.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He gave a survivor the message, 'If anything should happen to me, tell my wife I've done my best in doing my duty.'
    He refused to take a space on the lifeboats, saying 'No woman shall be left aboard this ship because Ben Guggenheim was a coward.'
    After escorting his mistress and her maid to a lifeboat, he and his valet changed into evening clothes, with Guggenheim commenting 'We've dressed up in our best and are prepared to go down like gentlemen.'
