He obtained royal status despite the fact that his mother, Princess Udol Ratana, married a foreigner.
Because of his royal status, he was probably given more attention than other tsunami victims who were simply buried in mass graves.

Why he might not be annoying:

He suffered from autism.
His condition helped raise awareness of autism in Thailand.
His autism improved as he got older.
He studied physical education.
