    Born in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania
    Member of Hot Tuna (1971-72) and the Jefferson Airplane/Starship (1971-75)
    Recorded the solo albums 'Filthy!' (1972), 'Playing My Fiddle For You' (1974), 'I'm the Fiddle Man' (1975), 'Rock Father' (1976), 'The Cat and the Fiddle' (1977), 'Inphasion' (1978) and 'Papa Blues' (1992)
    Appeared in the films 'Cry Danger' (1950), 'Blue Gardenia' (1953), 'A Gathering of Old Men' (1987) and 'Les Portes Tournante' (1988)
    Received the W.C. Handy Award from the Blues Foundation (1993)
    Before being discovered, he played in a band on an ocean liner.
    He described his playing as 'sawing wood.'
    He was two decades older than the rest of the Airplane.
    He played a wide variety of styles, including blues, jazz, country and classical.
    He was asked to join the Airplane full-time based on the enthusiastic audience reaction to just his tune-up.
    He said of his long career, 'I've just kept on going. I think I'll always keep on playing because it's therapy for me.'
    He suffered a heart attack during the Northridge earthquake (January 17, 1994) and died of complications a month later.
