She sought an abortion but was six months too young to have the procedure without parental consent.
An unsafe termination was carried out, and she died from an infection which set in.

Anti-abortion activists maligned her reputation, labeling her promiscuous.
As she lay dying, she asked her mother and father for forgiveness.
Her parents became advocates for abortion rights.
For some, her case highlighted the need for increased sex education and access to birth control.
