Why he might be annoying:

He chain smoked.
He lost the manuscript of his first novel after a drinking binge.
Almost all his titles followed the formula 'The [Proper noun] [Common noun].'
Publisher's Weekly said his 'most annoying' trademark was the 'use of italicized words or entire paragraphs to simulate passion.'
He has been almost as prolific dead as alive, thanks to unfinished manuscripts being completed by other authors and ghostwritten novels released under his name.

Why he might not be annoying:

He joined the Marines near the end of World War II.
The film adaptations of his Bourne novels resurrected Matt Damon's career.
He said, 'So much of the previous generation of novelists was self-indulgent. People wanted stories again. And I'm basically a storyteller.'
A Washington Post critic reviewed one of his novels with the comment, 'It's a lousy book. So I stayed up until 3 AM to finish it.'
