The Resume

    (November 7, 1942- )
    Born in Baltimore, Maryland
    Business consultant and author
Wrote ‘In Search of Excellence’ (with Robert Waterman, 1982), ‘Thriving on Chaos’ (1987), ‘Liberation Management’ (1992), ‘The Circle of Innovation’ (1997), ‘Re-Imagine! Business Excellence in a Disruptive Age’ (2003) and ‘The Little Big Things” 163 Ways to Pursue Excellence’ (2010)

Why he might be annoying:

He bought a farm with llamas.
Two-thirds of the companies he cited as models of excellence in ‘In Search of Excellence’ performed worse than the S&P 500 stock market index over the next five years.
A similar percentage of the 39 companies he claimed were worst on his six measures of excellence outperformed the S&P 500 over the same period.
He opened ‘Thriving on Chaos’ with the line ‘There are no excellent companies.’ (Perhaps ‘There may be excellent companies, but I clearly have no clue how to identify them’ was rejected as too wordy.)

Why he might not be annoying:

He served in Vietnam as a Navy Seabee.
’In Search of Excellence’ became the best-selling business book in history, and kept the title for two decades.
’In Search of Excellence’ was named one of the three most important business books of the 20th century by NPR.
The New York Times called him one of the three business gurus most in demand as a corporate speaker (1995).
