    Words commonly used to describe him include 'fiery,' 'combative' and 'feisty.'
    He upset fellow Republicans by helping to get his good friend David Souter, a non-conservative, appointed to the Supreme Court.
    Many Republicans also loathed his calls for increased taxes to balance the budget.
    The New York Times reported he had a strange feud with Syracuse University after they withheld his diploma for failing to pay an $18 yearbook fee.
    He chaired John McCain's failed Presidential campain (2000).

    He earned a Bronze Star for his service in the Korean War.
    He studied law at Boston College.
    Along with Gary Hart, he warned of terror threats months before 9/11.
    He was a sharp critic of the 'religious right' wing of the Republican Party.
    He advocated for fiscal responsibility.
