He was rumored to be a cross-dresser and was allegedly caught stealing Linda Darnell's dresses from the Fox wardrobe department.

During World War II, he served first as a cavalry instructor at Fort Riley, then with the infantry in Italy.
He won the first Golden Globe for Best Actor in a TV Comedy.
