Why she might be annoying:

    It took two decades before she achieved international acclaim.
    While starring at the Met, she feuded with director Eric Johnson and co-star Lauritz Melchior.
    During World War II, she returned to occupied Norway to be with her husband, who was later arrested for collaborating with the Nazis.
    She was pelted with vegetables and stink bombs in Philadelphia (1947).

Why she might not be annoying:

    She had perfect pitch.
    She was credited with saving the New York Metropolitan Opera from bankruptcy during the Depression.
    As a conciliatory gesture, she performed several benefit concerts for the United Jewish Appeal (1948).
    She remained approachable to fans and rarely exhibited diva behavior.
