The Keane waifs were widely criticized as tacky.
His ex-wife Margaret sued, claiming she was the one who actually did the paintings.
In a court demonstration, Margaret produced a Keane waif in 53 minutes.
Walter declined to paint, claiming he had a sore shoulder; Margaret won her case.
After declaring bankruptcy, Walter was found in contempt of court for concealing his assets (1987).
He name his four poodles Rembrandt, Gaugin, Matisse and Degas.
The waifs were popular, among the owners were Natalie Wood, Jack Paar and Joan Crawford.
Tom Wolfe reportedly landed one of his early jobs writing the text for a collection of the Keanes' work
