Why he might be annoying
During the 'Live Stiffs' tour of Britain (1977), he was described as 'almost permanently pissed [drunk], on and off stage.'
He went bankrupt (1988).
He had a nervous breakdown (1988).
He summed up the frustrations of being a one-hit wonder during an indifferently received concert when he asked the audience, 'Do you want me to play 'Whole Wide World'?' After the cheers died down, he then asked, 'Do you ever want me to play anything else?'
Why he might not be annoying
He stopped drinking and noted, 'I realized that if you weren't off your face, or looking to get off your face, you could actually have quite a nice time.'
He and his wife, fellow singer-songwriter Amy Rigby, hold concerts for fans in the living room of their house in New Yorks Catskills.
'MOJO' magazine wrote, 'Like Ray Davies, Kevin Ayers and Ian Dury, he is truly a great British songwriter.'
'Whole Wide World' is a two-chord classic and, as Will Ferrell demonstrated in 'Stranger Than Fiction,' an easy number for beginning guitarists to cut their teeth on.
