    Wrote the plays ‘The Seagull (1896),’ ‘Uncle Vanya (1889),’ ‘Three Sisters (1901),’ ‘The Cherry Orchard (1904)’ and many short stories
    Used the pen names ‘Antosha Chekhonte’ and ‘Man Without a Spleen’

Why he might be annoying:

    He called himself ‘a queer fish.’
    His plays and stories are full of depressing situations.
    Liberal intellectuals attacked him for alleged conservative views.
    Worst of all, he was a mime!

Why he might not be annoying:

    He grew up poor.
    He had a medical degree.
    He helped fight cholera outbreaks in Russian villages.
    He established a rest home for the terminally ill.
    He died of tuberculosis at 44.
    He influenced John Cheever, Ken Kesey and many other writers.
    A character on the original ‘Star Trek’ was named after him.
    He said: ‘I’m not a liberal or a conservative . . . I should like to be a free artist, and that’s all.’
