    (October 8, 1910-October 13, 2000)
    Born in Cherry Township, Minnesota
Birth name was Arvo Kustaa Halberg
Served 5-1/2 years in prison for conspiring to overthrow the US government in violation of the Smith Act (1951-57)
Chairman of the Communist Party USA (1959-2000)
Ran for US President four times (1972-84)
He was arrested for transporting bomb making materials during a strike, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor and was fined $500 (1937).
During an election, he was convicted on fraud and forgery charges and served 90 days in jai (1940).
He was an unrepentant Stalinist who backed the Soviet invasions of Hungary (1956), Czechoslovakia (1968) and Afghanistan (1980).
He opposed Mikhail Gorbachev and glasnost.
A former KGB general claimed that Hall set up a horse breeding farm by siphoning off money that the Soviets sent to subsidize the Communist Party.
His inflexibility drove away much of the party's membership, including his ex-running mate, Angela Davis.
He claimed, 'The world should see what North Korea has done. In some ways it's a miracle. If you want to take a nice vacation, take it in North Korea.'
He and his siblings grew up in near-starvation conditions after his miner father was blacklisted for participating in an IWW strike.
He was married to Elizabeth Turner for 65 years until his death.
He served with the US Navy in the Pacific as a machinist during World War II.
He remained a Communist even after the Soviet Union collapsed, so he at least gets points for consistency.
