Why he might be annoying:

As a youth, his father did not allow him to associate with other children, leaving him emotionally stunted.
His father oversaw his studies and worked him so hard that he had learned Greek and Latin, as well as most of the masterworks of philosophy before he was ten years old.
When he was 21, he suffered a nervous breakdown as a direct result of the pressure that his father put on him.
He held a peculiar empiricist's theory of mathematics which Gottlob Frege destroyed fairly easily.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was a child prodigy.
He found that poetry helped him recover from his nervous breakdown.
His brand of utilitarianism is generally considered superior to Jeremy Bentham's formulation.
Harriet Taylor, who would later become his wife, heavily influenced his later work.
He fought for women's suffrage and equality as well as the rights of the working poor.
His brand of utilitarianism has become the dominant Western ethical theory.
