    Born in Meran, Austria
    Author/illustrator/painter
    Best known for the seven 'Madeline' books
    Won the Caldecott Medal for illustration (1954)

Why he might be annoying:

    Because he was constantly in trouble at school, at 14 he was sent to live with his uncle and learn the hotel trade.
    While with his uncle, he shot and wounded a waiter; given a choice between reform school and leaving the country, he moved to America.
    He wrote a cartoon, 'The Thrilling Adventures of the Count Bric a Brac,' that was dropped after six months.
    He said all his books were autobiographical because he had no imagination.

Why he might not be annoying:

    When he was six, his father ran off with the family governess.
    He joined the US Army during World War I (but was not sent to Europe because of his Austrian background) and became a naturalized citizen in 1918.
    He painted murals for New York's Carlyle Hotel, which renamed its bar in his honor.
    His paintings have been displayed at the Metropolitan Museum in New York and the Musee National d'Art in Paris.
    He commented, 'We are writing for children, but not for idiots.'
