    Founded Sea Sciences Inc (1969)
    He failed to obtain his aeronautical engineering degree due to missing an exam and only received it on an honorary basis following his space flight.
    He only made the second American Earth orbital flight when fellow astronaut (and first choice) Deke Slayton was withdrawn with medical problems.
    Forced to manually pilot his Mercury capsule's landing, he overshot the landing zone causing the USS Intrepid to search for him.
    He was a qualified aeronautical engineer, a pilot and an astronaut.
    He served 3 tours of active duty flying fighter jets in the Korean War.
    He was chosen from hundreds of applicants to be one of NASA's first astronauts.
    His organization, Sea Sciences Inc, does much to protect our ocean environments.
    He has the unique distinction of being the first human ever to penetrate both inner and outer space.
    He suffered injuries from a motorcycle accident which prevented his return to space (1965).
