The Resume

    (November 1, 1959- )
Born in Nottingham, England, United Kingdom
Wrote ‘Jonathan Strange & Mr. Morell’ (2004), ‘The Ladies of Grace Adieu and Other Stories’ (2006), and ‘Piranesi’ (2020)

Why she might be annoying:

Asked what inspired her to write, she replied, ‘Boredom, probably.’
She originally started writing a detective novel but ‘I couldn’t get the plot right.’
She said about writing ‘Jonathan Strange,’ ‘If I had known it was going to take me ten years, I never would have begun.’
Her second novel took even longer to write.

Why she might not be annoying:

Her favorite authors include Jane Austen and Alan Moore.
When she submitted an excerpt from the in-progress ‘Jonathan Strange’ for a fantasy and science fiction writing workshop, the teacher showed it to Neil Gaiman, who said ‘It was terrifying from my point of view to read this first short story that had so much assurance.... It was like watching someone sit down to play the piano for the first time and she plays a sonata.’
She was diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome, partly explaining the long gestation periods for her novels.
She said about the publicity comparing ‘Jonathan Strange’ to the Harry Potter books, ‘I don’t take it very seriously. I don’t think there could be another Harry Potter – it’s such a unique phenomenon.’
