    Wrote 'All Creatures Great and Small' (1972), 'All Things Bright and Beautiful' (1974), 'All Things Wise and Wonderful' (1977), 'James Herriot's Yorkshire' (1979), 'James Herriot's Cat Stories' (1994) and 'James Herriot's Favorite Dog Stories' (1995)
    He suffered bouts of depression and feelings of inadequacy, culminating in a nervous breakdown.
    He did not begin writing until he was 50.
    His books were not popular in his native Britain until after they had been successful in the US.
    He died the day before he was to attend the opening of a library named after him at the Glasgow Veterinary School.
    He maintained his veterinary practice well after becoming a successful author, saying 'If a farmer calls me with a sick animal, he couldn't care less if I were George Bernard Shaw.'
    His books sold over 50 million copies in 20 languages.
    He was extremely approachable to his fans.
    He said he was 'dumbfounded' by the success of his books, noting 'The most I hoped for was that someone would publish it and a few people quite enjoy reading it.'
