Received scholarship to study at Patrice Lumumba University (1963)
Graduated from Azerbaijan State Oil Academy with engineering degree (1969)
Appointed member of Politburo of MPLA (September 1974)
President of Angola (September 10, 1979-September 25, 2017)
Backed founding of African Diamond Producers Association, an international organization that promotes investment in the African diamond industry (November 4, 2006)

Why he might be annoying:

His wife is 18 years his junior.
He keeps a tight stranglehold on Angola.
He controls most of Angola’s media.
His presidency is marred by massive corruption and the effects of civil war.
His family amassed quite a fortune while Angola remains one of the world’s poorest countries.
The opposition claimed that he deliberately delays elections in order to remain in power.

Why he might not be annoying:

He smiles easily.
He doesn't give speeches or show up in public excessively.
He likes music and soccer.
He lived in exile in France because of his pro-independence views (1961).
He eventually renounced Marxism (1991).
As of 2010, Omar Bongo’s death left him the second-longest serving leader in Africa after Muammar Gaddafi.
