    He has continued drinking and smoking despite being diagnosed with diabetes and developing diabetes-related neuropathy in his feet.
    He has lost multiple defamation suits filed by journalists and politicians that he insulted.
    During the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution that overthrew Communist rule, he was pelted with eggs by protestors who felt he is too authoritarian and too supportive of Russian leader Vladimir Putin (2014).
    During a state visit by the President of China, he dismissed protestors supporting a free Tibet were ‘mentally impaired individuals.’
    He said environmentalists protesting illegal logging should be treated in ‘a good old medieval way: burn them, piss on them, and salt them.’
    During a meeting with winemakers, he wished ‘Death to abstainers and vegetarians.’
    He called refugees from the Middle East ‘an organized invasion.’
    He suggested that Bosnia and Herzegovina could become a base for the Islamic State.
    He was expelled from the Communist Party for protesting the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia.
    When asked about his religion, he described himself as ‘a tolerant atheist.’
    A spokesperson said his ‘Death to abstainers and vegetarians’ remark was aimed at Adolf Hitler only.
    He commented about protests over an American military convoy crossing the Czech Republic, ‘I disagree with US troops being labelled an occupation army for one simple reason: We experienced occupation twice last century and we know what it looks like.’
    As the only European head of state to endorse Donald Trump as a presidential candidate, he said, ‘There are many politicians who admired Trump after the election, when courage is cheap.’
