Why he might be annoying
He was an alcoholic.
Late in life, he claimed to have been captured and tortured by the Japanese during WWII.
He used many of the same stock and stereotypical characters in his books (i.e., the gritty indestructible hero and the smarmy villain with a hulking henchman).
His later works were decidedly uninspired.
He sometimes used pseudonyms including (for a Scotsman) the very unimaginative Ian Stuart.
His popularity has dropped dramatically since his heyday and none of his books are in print in the United States as of 2006.
Why he might not be annoying
His major works are considered classics in the action genre.
He kept sex/romance and gadgets to a minimum, considering them distractions from the action.
He served in the Atlantic, Mediterranean and Pacific with the Royal Navy during WWII.
English was his second language after his native Gaelic.
Several highly successful movies were made from his books.
He received an honorary Doctor of Letters from the University of Glasgow ,from which had originally graduated in 1953.
