Why he might be annoying:

He was taken out of school at age eight to concentrate solely on the violin.
He was married three times and divorced twice, with his first marriage lasting under a year.
He refused to commission new works because he did not want to be obligated to perform the pieces if they came out badly.
Some critics felt his playing suffered because he spent too much time and energy promoting various causes.

Why he might not be annoying:

His protegees include Yitzhak Perlman and Yo-Yo Ma.
During World War II, he played for troops in Iceland, Greenland and the South Pacific.
He led the successful campaign to save Carnegie Hall from demolition (1960).
At a concert in Jerusalem during the Gulf War (1991), he continued playing as sirens sounded and the audience donned gas masks.
