World Leader

The Resume

    (December 9, 1954- )
    Born in Redange, Luxembourg
23rd Prime Minister of Luxembourg (1995–2013; Minister for Finances, 1989–2009)
President of the European Commission (2014– )
Recipient of the Grand Crosses of the Order of Merit — Luxembourg, 1988; Germany, 2013; Italy, 2014

Why he might be annoying:

Raised in the stronghold of the nation’s Socialist and Communist movements, among Italian and Portuguese families, he became politically active at an early age.
Sworn into the Luxembourg Bar Council (1980), he had not yet practiced as a lawyer proper.
Seriously injured in a road accident in 1989, he spent two weeks in a coma and experienced difficulty in physical balance thereafter.
Mere days into his tenure as head of the Commission, he had to contend with accusations that the nation had become a hot spot for tax evaders.
During a European council meeting, he decided to fiddle around with an unknown woman’s hair — and incurred the wrath of a British Secretary of State (‘grotesque’).
He has at least ten honorary doctorates (three in 2017 alone).

Why he might not be annoying:

He was the son of a steel plant worker, whose union activities enabled him to quickly become familiar with labor realities in the land.
Besides his native Letzeburgesch, he is fluent in French, German, and English (the first two being the national administrative languages).
He pioneered the most extensive tax reform known to the country at the time (1992).
In his first term as PM, he visited Dublin and mediated a successful policy dispute between Jacques Chirac and Helmut Kohl (1996).
Though he had initially criticized President Trump, at a G7 summit, the President tweeted a snapshot of them kissing at the White House the following month.
He incurred the wrath of Downing Street over Theresa May’s handling of Brexit.
