Why American Airlines might be annoying:

The crash of its flight 191 outside Chicago killed 273 people (May 25, 1979) and remains (as of 2022) the worst non-terrorism related airline disaster in the US.
It had repeated run-ins with the FAA over the maintenance of its MD-80 fleet, culminating in over 1,000 flights being cancelled over three days for inspections to ensure wiring bundles met government safety standards (April, 2008).
It filed for bankruptcy protection (2011).
The NAACP issued a travel advisory (October 24, 2017) recommending that African Americans 'exercise caution' in dealings with the airline after a series of incidents, such as a black woman being forced to move to economy while her white traveling companion was allowed to stay in first class.
It announced plans to add more seats to its Boeing 737s by further cutting legroom in the economy section (2018).

Why American Airlines might not be annoying:

It played a major role in convincing Douglas Aircraft to build the DC-3 (1935) and DC-10 (1970).
It teamed with IBM to create the first electronic booking system (1962).
It was the first major commercial airline to hire a female pilot, Bonnie Tiburzi (1973).
The NAACP lifted its advisory after the airline made improvements to reduce discrimination (July, 2018).
It is the world's largest airline by fleet size and number of passengers.
