    Wrote the books ‘After the Ball: Pop Music from Rag to Rock’ (1972), ‘Tin Pan Alley: A Pictorial History’ (1975), ‘Lotusland: A Story of Southern California’ (1979), ‘Rock Odyssey: A Chronicle of the Sixties’ (1983), and ‘The Beckoning Fairground: Notes of an English Exile’ (1994)

Why he might be annoying:

    He was less than thrilled when his record label released ‘You Turn Me On’ as a single, calling it ‘a real piece of junk.’
    He was a one-hit wonder.
    His one big hit was not released in his native Britain.
    He produced an album of Mae West attempting to sing rock songs.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He became one of the world’s leading authorities on pre-World War II pop music.
    He taught courses in film and pop music at the University of Southern California.
    He researched the period music that would have been played on the Titanic for James Cameron’s film.
    Singer Rudy Vallee left his pet dog and one of his megaphones to Whitcomb in his will.
