Restaurateur

The Resume

    (May 6, 1903-January 23, 1977)
    Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
    Birth name was Bernard Shor
Proprietor of Toots Shor's Restaurant in Manhattan
Regular clients included Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Jackie Gleason, Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra, Orson Welles and Ernest Hemingway

Why he might be annoying:

He started out as a bouncer in speakeasies.
He was a constant gambler who lost $100,000 on a Billy Conn-Joe Louis fight (1947).
His friendship with Joe DiMaggio ended when he responded to Joe's complaints about Marilyn Monroe's revealing costume in 'The Seven Year Itch' with, 'Aw, Joe. What can you expect when you marry a whore?'
The authorities padlocked the doors of his restaurant over nonpayment of federal, state and local taxes exceeding $250,000 (1971).

Why he might not be annoying:

When MGM head Louis B. Mayer complained about waiting 20 minutes for a table and added 'I trust the food will be worth the wait,' Shor replied, 'It'll be better than some of your crummy pictures I stood in line for.'
At his funeral, Jackie Gleason sent a spray of roses with a card reading, 'Save a table for two, Pal.'
Walter Cronkite said, 'Toots Shor was one of the figures who made New York the Big Apple.'
His restaurant is a favorite setting for Mad Men.
