Why he might be annoying:

He was depressed and humorless.
He had a horror of 'dirt and disorder.'
He was a compulsive list-maker by age eight.
He took part in laughing gas experiments with Humphry Davy, but claimed it had no effect on him.
His first thesaurus had the unwieldy title 'Thesaurus of English Words and Phrases Classified and Arranged so as to Facilitate the Expression of Ideas and Assist in Literary Composition.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He enrolled in the University of Edinburgh at age 14.
He was a founding member of the Royal Society of Medicine (1805).
He improved William Oughtred's invention to create the log-log slide rule (1815), allowing a person to perform exponential calculations simply.
He wrote articles for several editions of the Encyclopedia Britannica.
His thesaurus quickly became a standard reference book, going through 28 printings during his lifetime.
