    (January 5, 1900-January 15, 1955)
    Born in Paris, France
Birth name was Raymond Georges Yves Tanguy
    Last name pronounced 'tahn-ghee'
    Became a US citizen (1948)
    Surrealist painter
Works include 'Mama, Papa Is Wounded!' (1927), 'Promontory Palace' (1931), 'Indefinite Divisibility' (1942), 'Reply to Red' (1943) and 'Multiplication of the Arcs' (1954)
As a teen, he 'took to alcohol and the bohemian life.'
He tried to avoid military service by faking epilepsy.
His first marriage broke up over his enthusiasm for the bohemian lifestyle -- and his affair with art patron Peggy Guggenheim.
He said, 'You may think painting is to show something new, but no: Picasso and Dali do that, and they are monkeys.'
His father died when he was eight; his older brother died during WWI.
    He was a self-taught artist.
While working odd jobs in Paris, he began drawing cafe scenes that were praised by Maurice de Vlaminck.
The surreal landscapes of his paintings resemble the prehistoric rock formations of the coasts of his native Brittany.
