Religious Figure

The Resume

    (circa 1895-July 4, 1974)
    Born in Jerusalem, Israel
    Grand Mufti of Jerusalem (1921-1948)
Allied with Adolf Hitler by convincing him to support Arab nationalism and oppose the creation of a Jewish nation (1941)
Helped Nazi Germany broadcast pro-Axis, anti-Jewish propaganda to the Arabs during World War II
Continued doing so even after Nazi Germany’s downfall
    Died in Beirut, Lebanon

Why he might be annoying:

His birth year is sometimes listed as 1893, 1896, or 1897.
As Grand Mufti, he killed Jews and Arabs who opposed his pan-Arab ideology.
He triggered anti-Jewish riots in Palestine, most notably the one in 1929.
He held a General Islamic Congress to urge Arabs and Muslims to oppose Zionism (1931).
He urged Arabs to kill Jews because ‘it pleases God’.
He recruited Muslim peoples like Azerbaijanis and Bosnians into the Waffen SS.
He wanted the Holocaust to expand to North Africa and Palestine.
He repeatedly asked Nazi Germany to bomb Tel Aviv.
He presumably asked the Luftwaffe to bomb Jerusalem, which, if true, would show his religious ambiguity.
He was a coward, fleeing to Cairo rather than stand up for war crimes charges in Yugoslavia (1946).
He rejected and resisted the UN partition proposal of Palestine (1947).
He was a (bad) role model for Yasser Arafat.
Archives showing his collaboration with the Nazis that are displayed in Germany have caused worry among some Germans that they could dehumanize Muslims.
Arab writers, particularly Palestinian ones, justified his actions in Axis countries so much that they ignored his association with a totalitarian regime.

Why he might not be annoying:

He once served in the Ottoman army, but quit due to Ottoman attempts to impose their language and culture on the Arabs.
He was pro-British at first until they allowed Jewish immigrants to settle in Palestine.
The Axis Powers didn’t support his political aspirations.
Many Palestinians were so disgusted by his actions that they refused to fight against Israel in 1948.
Israeli writers have often exaggerated his actions.
His desire to be buried in Jerusalem was rejected by Israel.
