    (circa 770-circa 839)
First King of England (Wessex Line-January 802 to July 839)
Descended from Cerdic of Wessex, the Saxon king
    Spent time in Charlemagne's court
    Exiled by Offa of Mercia
    Returned to England in 802
Defeated Mercians at Ellendun in 825
    Became overlord of Northumbria
    Proclaimed sole ruler (Bretwalda)
He is known as the first King of England, yet at the time of his rule there was no concept of England as a nation.
In his greedy aspirations for more land, he conquered Wales.
He offered the Welsh this proposition: 'they could either leave England within six months, or they could leave the world.'
    He had a goofy name.
The House of Wessex that he established stayed in power until the Danish conquest of 1014.
He was successful in defending against the Danish invasions.
His ecclesiastical policies were highly favored by the Church.
