    Although he had directed hundreds of television productions, he never won an Emmy Award.
    He was a bomber pilot in World War II.
    His direction of the original television productions of ‘Marty’ and ‘The Bachelor Party’ led to his getting the film jobs.
    He won the Best Director Oscar for his first film.
    He won the Directors Guild of America's Honorary Life Member Award.
