In later years, many stations refused to play 'If You Wanna Be Happy' because of its misogynistic lyrics.
During the final years of his life, he fell into a life of drug abuse and was sentenced to four to nine years in prison for sale of a controlled substance.

He toured the southern United States with several gospel groups.
He served in the United States Army.
