The Resume

    (August 14, 1840-December 2, 1902)
    Born in Mannheim, Baden, Germany
Best known for 'Psychopathia Sexualis' (1886), a collection of case studies of sexual deviants

Why he might be annoying:

For years 'Psychopathia Sexualis' was regarded as a dirty book rather than a serious work.
He considered most forms of non-reproductive sex abnormal.
He angered Catholics by claiming some of the martyred saints were probably masochistic.
He thought sexual desire in elderly people caused senility.
Many of his findings came from case studies of sexual offenders.

Why he might not be annoying:

He studied sexuality from a scientific rather than moralistic perspective.
He initially considered homosexuality a perversion but changed his mind.
He invented the terms ‘sadism’ and ‘masochism.’
    He helped found forensic science.
Notwithstanding his controversial theories, he was a very respectable family man.
