Why he might be annoying:

He spent two years prospecting for gold in California.
His first and middle name is the same as the author of the Little Mermaid.
His statue in front of the Wisconsin State Capitol was pulled down, decapitated, and thrown into Lake Monona amid protests against police brutality (June 2020).

Why he might not be annoying:

He immigrated to America with his family at the age of eleven.
He was an outspoken member of the anti-slavery Free Soil Party.
He spearheaded prison reform in Wisconsin.
He sheltered abolitionists in his home when they became fugitives for working against slave catchers.
He led the only all-Scandinavian regiment in the Union Army.
He was injured during the Battle of Stones River after falling off his horse during heavy fire.
He was shot in the abdomen at Chickamauga and died two days later (it was later revealed his commanding officer intended to make him a Brigadier General).
The forcible removal of his statue came off as particularly inexplicable given both his virulent anti-slavery leanings and the fact that he fought for the Union against the Confederacy.
