    Released from custody without charges (October 9, 1947)
    Died in Freiberg am Neckar, Germany at age 64
    He was one of 10 children born to a German miner and his wife.
    At age 19 he joined the Nazi Party (April 1, 1930).
    He vowed to protect Hitler with his life.
    He was in the Führerbunker just before Hitler and Eva Braun committed suicide, but ran out before the deed because he couldn't stomach it.
    In 2008, Osama Bin Laden's driver Salim Hamdan stated at his trial that he shouldn't be brought up on charges because Hitler's chauffeur was not tried as a war criminal.
    Before his work for the Nazi Party he was a mechanic for the auto maker DKW.
    He helped burn up Hitler's body.
    He chastised Hitler's personal deputy Martin Bormann for carrying Braun's body out of the bunker for burning 'like a sack of potatoes.'
    He called Braun 'the unhappiest woman in Germany.'
    He penned his memoirs in 1951 under the title 'Ich habe Adolf Hitler verbrannt' (I cremated Adolf Hitler).
    James P. O'Donnell's 1978 book 'The Bunker,' a look at Hitler's final days, quotes him repeatedly and often humorously.
    In the book he states that Magda Goebbels was so taken by Hitler that when he was around, you could 'hear her ovaries rattling.'
